Export a STEP file from SOLIDWORKS

To make an assembly manual, the STEP file has to contain the whole assembly: every part, its name and where it sits. Here is how to export it from SOLIDWORKS.

Steps

  1. Open the top-level assemblyOpen the .SLDASM of the whole product, not a part file. Resolve lightweight components so every part is fully loaded.
  2. File › Save AsIn the dialog, set Save as type to STEP AP214 (*.step;*.stp). AP242 is fine too.
  3. Check the optionsThe default STEP options are fine: they write the assembly with its structure, part names and positions. Only change them if your company requires a specific AP version.
  4. SaveChoose a name and save. SOLIDWORKS writes one .step that contains every component with its position.
